In 2016 we watched a video about the bond between homeless people and their dogs. It made us appreciate everything we have and the fact that our four dogs had all the home comforts they could ever need. All our dogs are rescues and were found either on the streets on the Greek Islands or tied up and abandoned...they are the lucky ones but unfortunately there are plenty more like them at home and abroad. Sadly we can't help them all so we decided to focus on the dogs who give such comfort and companionship to homeless people on the streets of London. We started by asking our friends for donations of dog food, blankets, treats, toys and dog coats and we were inundated with so much it almost filled our shed. Three of us ventured out with suitcases packed with goodies for the dogs, the homeless people were so grateful and accepted everything we offered. All the dogs we saw were well cared for and the bond between them was so obvious, many people chose to stay on the streets rather than give up their loyal companion. The stories we heard were heartbreaking and it has made us determined to do it every year.
Marley was one of our dogs who lost his battle with cancer in 2017, he was found wandering around the streets in Lesvos and was about 5 years old. We adopted him when he was seven not knowing a thing about his past. Well, he was the most laid back dog we have ever met and had the kindest nature you could ever wish for. The love and devotion he gave to us for the next 6 years knew no bounds, he was grateful for everything we gave him and that's why we have named our mission 'Marleyboy's Mission' as we know he would love every dog to have a little something to make them happy for a while.
We have put out our appeal for this year and again the response has been amazing. We can't thank our supporters enough and we have seen so many happy dogs thanks to you.
We don't ask for cash donations however last year we received £200, we spent every penny on the dogs and posted receipts on Facebook. This year it looks like we are heading towards a higher amount and we have already bought some warm, waterproof dog coats.
Last year we were told that many homeless people with dogs were being moved out of London to Brighton. So we followed the trail and also met up with the Street Vets organisation in Brighton, they do wonderful work treating the dogs and giving advice to the homeless. We gave coats, treats and toys for them to hand out as they reach far more dogs than we ever could. This year our focus will again be on Brighton and our local area of Kingston upon Thames.
Any items not handed out by us will be sent to small independent UK dog rescues who simply do not have the money to give the dogs a treat. Many are in cold kennels with nothing, yes they are safe but not always comfortable so we send parcels for Christmas either by post or by working directly with contacts in the dog rescue world. Every year we also send out thick blankets and sleeping bags to the wonderful people helping the Romanian dogs by saving them from the kill shelters.
If you can help in any way please contact us by phone, email or Facebook. You can follow us on Facebook to read all the updates.
